A precinct must have 5 registered Democrats meeting in person in order to have a quorum. This is your voting precinct - so the people that vote in the same geographic area at the same polling site that you do. You probably already know many of the dems in your precinct. Get them to come out with you to this organizational meeting.
The following positions are to be elected: Chair, Vice-Chair, Secretary/Treasurer and at least 2 other committee members whose duties would be assigned by the chair as needed (Note: none of our precincts have their own funding, so the Sec/Treas position is really just Secretary)
"The vice chair must be of a different gender identity than the chair and should, where possible, be of a race other than that of the chair. No officers of the precinct committee shall be from the same immediate family residing in the same household. Elections for all positions are in order for 2023. Please review the Plan of Organization for more information." These rules were created to have as much inclusion and representation within the party as possible, so keep them in mind. We realize they can't be adhered to in all precincts, but we strive to do our best.
Political organization in our county is critical to our success to turning out the vote in local, state and federal elections and has been slowly in decline since the early 1990s. Each organized precinct is allocated a certain number of delegates to attend the Wilkes County Convention, which is our mechanism for electing our County Party Officers, who represent Wilkes County in our Congressional District and our State Executive Committee meetings.
The process seems overwhelming and confusing to many, and that may prevent them from participating, but political organization starts at the precinct level. It's the foundation of our democracy and its also the most direct way to interact with your neighbors, understand their concerns, and take action to creating change within your community. Attending local governmental meetings of commissioners or school board with neighborhood concerns, stocking food pantries, being a watchdog of crime, beautifying our environment - all these things are good that we can do with our precincts. We are more powerful together than alone.
We ARE more powerful together than alone.
Precinct Chairs, or individuals interested in getting your precinct organized, please reach out to us and come to this important meeting.
